Breakthrough New Orleans teaching fellow alum and Hurricane Katrina survivor Markus Reneau (pictured left in the photograph as a teaching fellow) graduated from Yale University this week! After being introduced to the International Baccalaureate Foundation, Markus attended the International High School of New Orleans and studied creative writing at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, and went on to teach 6th and 9th grade writing and literature to Breakthrough New Orleans students. He continued to mentor students in New Haven, and plans to be a teaching fellow and college counselor at a boarding school in England in the fall. When he returns to New Orleans, Markus is determined to reform its public education system and to create opportunities for young people in his community.
We’re so excited to see that Markus is so passionate about reforming education and creating opportunities for students, and we can’t wait to see what he does next. Congratulations, Markus!
