Earlier this week, Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Alex Serna’s response to Erica Green’s recent piece “Low-Income College Students Face Tax Increase” was published by The New York Times. In his letter to the editor Alex asks, “What does taxing up to 37 percent of a low-income student’s non-tuition assistance say about our [country’s] values?” He calls us to look at the hardworking students he works with every day – students who “embody determination, humility, gratitude, perseverance and compassion” and encourages us to be more like them to ensure that “our values…reflect them accordingly.”
