Founder of Breakthrough New Orleans and head of New Orleans’ oldest charter school organization, Jay Altman, will be retiring at the end of this school year after three decades working in education. In 1992 Altman worked with a team of parents and the Breakthrough New Orleans team to found the James Lewis Extension school which later converted to New Orleans Charter Middle School, the city’s first ever charter. Altman plans to continue to support and advise FirstLine while working on a “variety of education and youth related initiatives.”
