The Operation Varsity Blues scandal has shone a spotlight on the inequities in the college admissions system. This weekend, the Miami Herald highlighted Breakthrough Miami’s work to combat those inequities. The piece, written by Breakthrough Collaborative CEO Elissa Vanaver and Breakthrough Miami CEO Lori-Ann Cox , discusses the importance of offering all students the chance to succeed and highlights the incredible accomplishments of Breakthrough’s students. “Breakthrough’s Class of 2018 high school graduates entered four-year colleges and universities at a rate 50 percent higher than all U.S. high school graduates — including those from affluent families.”
As Vanaver and Cox write, “We owe these students a college admissions system that upholds basic standards of fairness.” Programs like Breakthrough’s are the first step towards giving all students the chance they deserve to succeed.
