The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s K-12 Education strategy is to support educators and district leaders in K-12 public schools in their work to improve student outcomes for Black, Latino, and students experiencing poverty.

Breakthrough has received a grant from the foundation to pilot culturally responsive math tutoring for middle school students in the 2021-22 school year at Breakthrough Greater Boston and Breakthrough Central Texas. Breakthrough is part of a cohort of organizations the Gates Foundation is supporting with the goal of testing the features and conditions of tutoring models that create strong, positive student experiences with math that translate into tangible academic impacts. Breakthrough was selected because of the deep roots we have in the communities we serve and our track record of building affirming Teaching Fellow-student relationships. This funding will allow Breakthrough to further develop our school-year delivery model and capture learnings that will inform the strengthening and expansion of our year-round programming across the Collaborative.
