To inspire excellent young people into the field of teaching and track our teacher alumni’s impact on the field of education, Breakthrough is launching the Teacher Pipeline Project. Our goal is to guide our most promising teachers into the best teacher training organizations in the United States. Through this project, Breakthrough will select a small number of outstanding partners with whom we will build a pipeline into the classroom for our teachers graduating from college. In exchange for being identified as a Breakthrough Teacher Pipeline Partner, partners will report on successes of Breakthrough Teacher Alumni in their selection process and training programs.

MATCH operates the MATCH Teacher Residency (underneath the umbrella of the MATCH Corps tutoring program) to prepare residents to become unusually effective and confident first-year classroom teachers. The 1 year training program results in a teacher certification in Math or English in the state of Massachusetts. What sets MTR apart from other teacher prep programs? First, we’re prescriptive, like a sports coach or piano teacher; you learn and practice very specific “Teacher Moves.” Second, trainees are specifically being prepared to teach in certain charter schools with a track record of “turning around” low-performing kids. Third, we have a very particular approach, which involves building relationships 1-on-1 with kids and parents, then using those relationships to run a tight ship in class, enforcing rules consistently, and pushing/demanding a LOT from kids.
