Breakthrough Collaborative is proud to announce the launch of our national search for outstanding teachers to serve as Instructional Coaches for Breakthrough’s award-winning nine-week summer Teaching Residency. Breakthrough’s Instructional Coaches (ICs) provide intensive training, coaching, and support to our Teaching Fellows—top college and high-school students from across the country who compete for 1,000 positions in our prestigious Teaching Residency. Together, Teaching Fellows and Instructional Coaches provide transformative summer learning experiences for primarily low-income students, the majority of whom will be the first in their families to graduate from four-year colleges.
Teaching Fellows bring energy, commitment, and a willingness to learn, as they serve as full-time teachers for six-week summer sessions. Instructional Coaches bring experience, knowledge, passion for preparing the next generation of urban teachers, and a commitment to equity and excellence. Coaching with Breakthrough is a life-changing opportunity to learn, teach, and lead.
Instructional Coaches receive intensive training and materials to support Teaching Fellows while they implement Breakthrough-specific teaching strategies and curricula. ICs help Teaching Fellows differentiate lessons, engage challenging students, and assess student work. ICs work closely with each other and Breakthrough Directors to ensure all Teaching Fellows receive the support they need to be effective teachers. For more information, see the Instructional Coach Job Description.
Please read the IC Site Directory to learn about local program structures, time commitments, compensation details, and position availability. If you have additional questions about specific sites, please contact the directors directly. On the Instructional Coach application, you will have the opportunity to select up to three Breakthrough sites in order of preference. If you are selected to coach at Breakthrough, you will receive an offer from only one site.
Please note that Breakthrough does not provide housing for Instructional Coaches, so please apply to sites located in cities where you can provide your own housing.
Hiring decisions for Instructional Coaches are made on a rolling basis, but our application is not currently accepting submissions for 2015. Please check back in the coming months for 2015 deadline information and other updates. For more information, please contact Sarah Joslyn Wahl, Director, Teacher Pipeline at (617) 682-7373 or email@example.com.
What does the Instructional Coach selection process look like?
Following the submission of your application, you may be contacted for a classroom visit or a video submission of a sample teaching presentation; submission of your academic transcript(s); an interview; and/or a mock coaching session. You will be contacted directly by a director if you advance to the next stage in the selection process.
What does it mean to be part of the Breakthrough network?
Your Breakthrough experience may be beginning this summer, but it won’t end when the summer does. You will join tens of thousands of Breakthrough Alumni who are working across the country to transform education. You will be eligible to participate in our regional trainings and future Leadership Summits and to engage with Breakthrough coaches across the country. The Breakthrough movement will cause systemic changes in our public schools, and we are thrilled you are joining us on this exciting journey.
