Breakthrough Atlanta has finally come to an end. I could not have asked for a more rewarding experience. It seems like so long ago when I had sent in the application to be a teacher intern. I had always considered education for a profession, but when deciding on colleges I ended up choosing Tech where I would major in engineering. I am now entering my senior year at Tech and with the end coming closer, I have really started to consider a few options for a possible career, one of which is teaching. I had never had any true teaching experience, just some tutoring here and there. When I was searching for some possible internships for this summer I came across Breakthrough (actually the night before the application was due). The job looked so appealing to me and was something I could truly imagine myself doing so I completed the application that night and submitted it just a few hours before it was due. At the time, I assumed I would just come in, teach a few math lessons and come home. This experience is nothing like what I expected, but it was definitely better! This summer had some ups and downs, but in the end it was all worth it. I never thought a summer internship could be so rewarding. I never believed that I could become so attached to a group of eleven and twelve year olds and have such a large impact on their lives. I have never met such an outstanding group of people as the teacher interns. They are all amazing young people who truly want to make a difference in the world and I will treasure my friendships with each and every one of them forever. This summer definitely showed me how much work it is to be a teacher, both how physically and mentally exhausting the job can be, but in the end the engineering field may lose me to education.
