I've finished the second day of teaching with the kids, and all I really have to say is "Wow." These kids really are great. Granted, they still are middle schoolers, and they still love to make a big fuss and act super cool, but in the classroom when it's time to get to business the students shine. While grading their physics pre-tests, I found them making acute observations about topics they barely knew about, and even when they got it wrong they didn't lack for trying.
These kids are so smart that I always find myself being okay with their craziness. 13-year-olds are 13-year-olds, regardless of their acuity, and they remind me of this all the time. I love them, but at the end of the day I'm thanking goodness for the chance to finally sit down and catch my breath. After I get a minute (and a good night's sleep), though, I'll be ready for them to come bounding out those bus doors again! Tomorrow is the first day of drama club, and on Monday I got a lot of kids queueing up at my little table excited to jump into as much of acting as I could offer them. I only hope I'll be able to calm those fireballs down enough to learn their exercises.
