Sometimes learning SSAT words can save the whole Breakthrough New Haven community from being stranded on an island forever, or at least, that’s how the story goes. In order to help prepare our students for academically rigorous, college preparatory high schools, this year’s summer theme is the SSAT. Every week, Breakthrough students have about twenty vocabulary words to learn. Although this sounds like a daunting task, and hard work too, our students strive to learn these words in order to get us off the island.

What island? New Haven is not an island. No, but in our summer story, Breakthrough New Haven went vacationing. After playing beach volleyball and learning, creating, and being inspired for a week, Breakthrough students and teachers came back to the beautiful shores of Island Aiyania (named after dean of students) to a shocking disaster. Oh no! Five pieces of our boat, including the steering wheel and rudder, are gone!

After much despair and contemplation, we realized that maybe the one temple, and only building, on the island could help us. Knock! Knock! Knock! We were hopefully waiting by the temple gates. Suddenly, an oracle appeared. She told us that when the moon is full and the sea turtles dance, words will wash up on the shore of the island. We will have to learn these words and repeat them to her. In return, she will give us back the pieces of our boat.

The Breakthrough New Haven community let out a sigh. We can get off this island! Thankfully! We just need to learn these words now! There is hope!! With that, the students got to work learning the words of week one. These SSAT words will help our students excel and both literally and metaphorically sail on the sea of knowledge towards college success!
