Dartmouth College Class of 2014

My Neuroscience class has greatly improved over the course of the past 6 weeks. As a teacher, I have learned how to effectively communicate ideas, switch up note taking and lesson styles, and how to roll with the punches. My ability to really know how much the class has learned and retained has changed dramatically. I am now able to realize when even one student isn’t completely following the direction of the lesson and I am able to assess the situation and move forward. I think this program has truly impacted, not only my ability to teach, but also my ability to be understanding, thoughtful, and flexible. This summer has been about much more than bridging the education gap, as my students are not only learning about the brain, but also how to be incredible members of society.

A huge part of Breakthrough, for me, was learning the art of patience. I have found that without this, I would not have survived. I think that this was essential in my ability to step back from my lessons, realize that they are not perfect, and understand that there are always improvements that can be made. I believe the best teachers are the ones who are willing to admit to the flaws in their lessons and assignments. No one is perfect, no lesson is perfect, and there is always room to grow. Before this summer, I definitely had a hard time admitting things could improve and was much more stubborn. The skills that I have acquired will help me beyond teaching, as they are essential for sanity and growth in my daily life.

Everything for Celebration has slowly, but surely come into place. The student song has made dramatic improvements and I cannot wait for them all to display their talents for all the parents and staff. I am positive that their journey through Breakthrough will stay with them much further than Celebration, and that is what makes me the most excited. I cannot wait for the students to truly understand how proud we are of them and how inspiring they have been to all the teachers this summer.
