Andrew
Ach is a partner at a public finance advisory firm, Norcross
Hill & Ach, and has been advising public agencies, in particular
public school districts, on how to raise money through municipal bonds
and other instruments for the better part of two decades. He served
for nine years on the Board of Trustees of The Urban School of San
Francisco, an independent high school, as Treasurer, Chair of the
Finance Committee, and member of the Executive Committee and Committee
on Trustees. He has also served on the boards of the Haight Ashbury
Free Clinic and the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning at University
of San Francisco. Andy recieved a B.S. Political Science from UC Riverside,
and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at U.C.L.A. Andy
and his wife, Linda, live with their three children in San Francisco.
Mark
Atkinson The founder and Chief Executive
Officer of Teachscape, Inc., a national organization that assists
educators in introducing 21st-century teaching practices into their
classrooms, Mr. Atkinson is an award-winning journalist who previously
worked for both ABC and CBS News. Mr. Atkinson graduated from Yale.
Tim
Barton is
the founder and Managing Partner of Barton Executive Search in Atlanta,
Ga. Under Tim's direction, Barton Executive Search has become a recognized
leader in the executive search industry. Prior to founding Barton
Executive Search, Tim functioned as a sales executive with Procter
& Gamble. Tim also serves on the board of Breakthrough Atlanta,
which is an affiliate of Breakthrough Collaborative. Tim received
his B.S. in Business Administration from Bryant University.
Melissa
Buckley is an independent strategic consultant to non-profits
and healthcare companies. Her clients include Room to Read, the California
HealthCare Foundation, and the United Way Bay Area. Prior to working
independently, Melissa was a consultant at McKinsey & Co in New
York and San Francisco. She has also worked in Investment Banking
at J.P Morgan and at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights in Washington,
D.C. Currently, Melissa is also a Trustee for the SMART Program, a
non-profit organization that provides scholarship and social and academic
support to low-income middle school students. Melissa graduated from
Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology and from Harvard
University with a Masters in Public Policy. She and her husband, Raj
Atluru, reside in San Francisco with their three young children.
José
Davila leads
human resources functions for all of the Gap stores in the U.S. and
Canada. He recently returned from an expatriate role in Japan where
he served as the human resources leader for the domestic business
including both Gap and Banana Republic. Prior to Gap, José
was responsible for driving the people integration agenda for Diageo
during their acquisition of the Joseph E. Seagram business. During
his career he has also served in various global human resources leadership
roles in Godiva, Campbell Soup and Nabisco. José holds a Masters
Degree in Adult and Workplace Education from Columbia University,
and a BS Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University. He
currently resides in Mill Valley, California with his wife, Meghan,
and their two children.
John
Flickinger is one
of Breakthrough Miami's founders and the longest-serving Executive
Director of any of the 34 national Breakthrough programs. John and
his good friend Doug Weiser, both `74 Ransom Everglades graduates,
started the program in 1991 with 40 students. John himself was a motivated
student from modest beginnings, attending Ransom on scholarship. After
receiving a B.A. from Colgate University and a Masters from Union
Theological Seminary, John worked as a labor organizer in rural Mississippi
and later, a community organizer in New York's inner-city. In the
fall of 2008, John decided to step down as Executive Director of Breakthrough
Miami, after paving way for a new board of directors and an expanded
professional team of staffers. Currently, John serves as a Development
Consultant with Breakthrough Miami.
Matthew
Gunn has been a research assistant to former Secretary of
State George Schultz at the Hoover Institute since 2005. Among the
works he has co-authored include analyses of energy, social security
and health care policy. Matt is a graduate of Stanford University.
The Gunn family has been a long-standing and very generous supporter
of Breakthrough and Matt is eager to spread the Breakthrough message
to a new generation of supporters and is a graduate student at University
of Chicago.
Betsy
A. Hannaford currently serves on the boards
of The Guthrie Theater and Graywolf Press, and is an active volunteer
at The Blake School in Minneapolis. She is a former board member of
Planned Parenthood of Minnesota and the Ripley Foundation. Betsy graduated
from Pomona College and NYU School of Law.
Sheila
Larsen has been long involved
in Bay Area civic affairs. She has been affiliated with San Francisco
School Volunteers, the Northern California chapter of Achievement
Rewards for College Scientists, the San Francisco Educational Fund
and the Children’s Theatre Association of San Francisco. A graduate
of Stanford, Ms. Larsen earned a master’s degree from Northwestern’s
Medill School of Journalism and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s
Wharton School of Business. A professional actor, she also worked
as the director of operations for Levi Strauss and director of volunteer
activities for the San Francisco Symphony.
Robert
Macrae is the Head of School at Cincinnati Country Day School
in Cincinnati, Ohio. He previously spent seventeen years at The Pingry
School in New Jersey where he was Assistant Headmaster, Head of the
Middle School, Head of the Upper School, teacher, advisor, and coach.
In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees for Summerbridge
Cincinnati, Inc., he is also currently a member of the Board for The
Fund for Independent Schools of Cincinnati, Inc. (FISC) and Queen
City Foundation. Rob received his Doctor of Education degree and a
M.A. in educational administration from Teachers College, Columbia
University. He graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in economics,
mathematics and computer science, and holds an additional M.A. in
educational administration and policy analysis from Stanford University.
William
Matthes joined Behrman Capital in April 1996 and
has been a Managing Partner of the firm since January 1999. Most
recently, he was Chief Operating Officer of Holsted Marketing, Inc.,
a direct marketing company owned by his family. Previously, Mr.
Matthes spent seven years at Brentwood Associates, a leveraged buyout
and venture capital firm with more than $500 million under management,
where he was a General Partner. Prior to that, he was an Analyst
with Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc. In 1986, Mr. Matthes earned an MBA
with high distinction from Harvard Business School, where he was
both a Baker Scholar and a Loeb Rhoades Fellow. He has an AB in
Economics from Stanford University, where he graduated with honors
and distinction. Mr. Matthes currently serves on several boards
including The Management Network Group, Inc., Tandem Health Care,
Inc., Celerity Group, Inc., ILC Industries, Inc., and Hunter Defense
Holdings, Inc., where he serves as chairman. At both Stanford and
Harvard, he was active as a Teaching Assistant and Tutor in Finance
and Engineering. He continues his interest in education both as
a Trustee of the University School in Cleveland, Ohio, and as a
guest lecturer at Stanford Business School.
Stu
McLaughlin is a partner at Sansome
Partners, a San Francisco-based investment firm. Previously, he
worked in venture capital and as a management consultant. More importantly,
he was a teacher at the Breakthrough Program in San Francisco for
two summers, once as a high school student and once as a college
student. Stu holds an M.B.A. from Stanford and a B.A. from Williams
College.
Polly
Merrill taught at The Brearley School in New York City
for many years. Subsequently while living in Boston, she worked
in school administration at Milton Academy. In more recent years
she has been a volunteer on various not-for-profit boards. She was
Vice-Chairman of the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT.,
a member of its Development and Executive Committees. Currently
she serves on the Lyman Allyn Museum board, in New London, CT..
She graduated from Wheaton College and took graduate courses at
Rutgers University and Bank Street College of Education.
Marshall
C. Milligan is a graduate of Stanford Graduate School of
Business and Yale University. He is the former President of the
Board for the Thacher School and former President and C.E.O. of
Bank A Levy. Having chaired many committees and boards, Marshall
is known for encouraging relevant discussion, for building consensus,
and for helping boards to exceed their own expectations.
Billy
Peebles is Headmaster at The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia.
Previously, he was Headmaster at The Asheville School for ten years
and at Powhatan School for seven years, and has enjoyed teaching American
History for almost 25 years. In addition to being a member of the
Board of Trustees for Breakthrough Collaborative, he is also currently
a member of the Board of Governors at St. Catherine’s School,
the Breakthrough/Atlanta Board of Advisors, and the Board of Directors
of the American Association for Gifted Children. Mr. Peebles received
an AB in Politics from Princeton University, an MBA from the Colgate
Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia,
and is currently pursuing a PhD from Virginia Theological Seminary.
Michael
Schweitzer is
Managing Director of Private Wealth Services at UBS. Prior to UBS,
Mr. Schweitzer worked for 14 years at Merrill Lynch, most recently
as Head of Sales for Private Wealth Management. He spent 3 years previous
as a CPA with Deloitte and Touche. A San Diego native, Mr. Schweitzer
received his B.S. in Business Administration from San Diego State
University. He lives with his wife, Lisa, their two boys and two dogs.
Andy Shin
is the Executive Director of Breakthrough San Francisco at San Francisco
Day School. From 2004-2007 he was Program Director with Breakthrough
Cambridge. Between his service with these two programs, from 2007
to 2008 he earned his Ed.M. at the Harvard Graduate School of Education,
was an Education Pioneer with Summer Search, and served as a Site
Director with Aim High. Andy entered teaching with Teach for America
immediately after graduating from Brown University in 1999, teach
math and science at Havenscourt Middle School in Oakland, and at the
Steppingstone Academy in Boston.
Sarah E. Stein
is currently a Managing Director and the Deputy Director of Research
at Hall Capital Partners. She was an English teacher in Guangzhou,
China in 1998 and spent a summer in college teaching at Peninsula
Bridge (which offers a program similar to Breakthrough). She holds
an MBA and a Masters in Education from Stanford University and a BA
in History from Princeton University. Sarah currently serves as a
Board Member for Crystal Springs Uplands School, KIPP Bayview Academy
and is a member of the Investment Committee of the San Francisco Foundation.
Nadine Terman and her
husband are strong believers in the link between education and lifetime
achievement. Although she learned a significant amount through her
husband's leadership positions at several Bay Area, education-focused
non profits, Nadine wanted a more direct impact on improving educational
opportunities for our youth and, thus, joined Breakthrough Collaborative.
Nadine is a Partner with Blum Capital, an investment firm focused
on both public and private equity markets. She works extensively with
portfolio companies' management teams and boards of directors on business,
financial, and governance initiatives. Nadine has a BA with Honors
and with Distinction from Stanford University, and she has an MBA
from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where she was an Arjay
Miller Scholar.
Glen
Tripp is the founder and CEO of Galileo Learning a summer
camp program from K-12 students in the San Francisco Bay Area. While
an undergrad at Stanford University, Glen got his first camp job at
Stanford Sierra Camp and discovered the joy of working with kids outside
of school. A few years after graduating, he was named Vice President
of Operations at SCORE! Educational Centers and helped lead its expansion
over a six year period. In 2001 Glen returned to his camp roots and
founded Galileo to fulfill a dream of developing a camp that nurtures
creativity in young people. Glen and his wife Lauren are the parents
of two old boys, the oldest of whom has happily attended Camp Galileo
for the past two years.
Carl
Vogt is Of Counsel (formerly a Senior Partner)
in the Washington, DC office of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P., a
law firm. Mr. Vogt was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated
from Williams College, attended the Boalt Hall
School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley and graduated
from the University of Texas Law School, Austin, Texas. Mr.
Vogt served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962
and was a jet fighter pilot with duty aboard the aircraft carrier
USS Lexington in the western Pacific. He has served as a member of
the executive committee of the Board of Directors, Boys and Girls
Clubs of Greater Washington and was Chairman in 1988 of the Annual
Congressional Dinner. He was Chairman, Law Firms Division, of the
1991 Greater Washington United Way Campaign. He was a Founding Trustee
of the Chinquapin School for underprivileged boys in Highlands, Texas.
Mr. Vogt and his wife Margrit have two grown daughters. They reside
in Potomac, Maryland.
Grace
Voorhis is a former Partner at Morgan Stanley Venture
Partners (MSVP), a venture capital firm with $1.2 billion under management.
She was responsible for health care and medical device investing and,
in that capacity, sat on the Board of several small for-profit companies.
Prior to MSVP, Grace was an Analyst with Morgan Stanley & Co.,
Inc. in New York. Grace also currently serves as a Trustee for The
Nueva School. In the past, she has served as a Trustee of KIPP Bay
Area Schools, Treasurer of the St. Francis Homes Association, and
has been involved in numerous Stanford ACT Projects. Grace received
her AB magna cum laude in Social Studies from Harvard and her MBA
from Stanford Business School. She and her husband, Steve, are the
parents of three young children.
Trevor Watt is a Director at Hellman & Friedman, a San
Francisco-based private investment firm. Previously, he worked as
an Executive Director in the Investment Banking Division at Morgan
Stanley. Trevor holds an AB in Politics with high honors from Princeton
University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
His mother is a former teacher of romance languages at public schools
in Los Angeles and Chicago, as well as in his original hometown of
Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Joan
Wattles has a long-standing dedication to volunteering and
has served as board and Committee member to organizations such as
the Colorado Ballet, St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, Kent
Denver School, Breakthrough Kent Denver, Rio Grande School and Santa
Fe Prep. Joan has been a long-time supporter of the Breakthrough Kent
Denver and the Kent School. She has seven kids and holds education
as a top priority.
David Winton
is the founding partner of Winton duPont
Films, a film and television production company with offices in
New York and San Francisco. His company produces programs for leading
broadcast and cable networks, including PBS, The History Channel,
National Geographic, and TechTV, as well as Fortune 100 companies,
advertising agencies, and public interest groups. He is on the board
of trustees of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He is also
head of the contemporary acquisitions committee for the Addison
Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy Andover, as well as
a member of the advisory councils to the Bard Center for Curatorial
Studies and the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers. He is a graduate
of Harvard College and lives in San Francisco with his wife, Charlotte
Vaughan, and their three children.
Rhea Wong was
born and raised in San Francisco, CA and considers herself a Breakthrough
“lifer”. She was a student at the original Breakthrough
(then known as Summerbridge) site in San Francisco. Following her
experience as a student, she taught at our sites in Hawaii (1996),
Hong Kong (1997) and New York (1999). Rhea also worked for three
years at Breakthrough’s National Office, specializing in teacher
recruitment and alumni relations. She is thrilled with the opportunity
to bring her myriad Breakthrough experience to the board in thinking
through steps for the future of the organization. Rhea
received a BA with honors in Political Science from McGill University
in Montreal, Canada. In addition to serving as ED of Breakthrough
New York, Rhea is the Chair of the Breakthrough Directors Council.
Beth
C. Porter, National Executive Director
Beth Porter has worked for Breakthrough for 13 years in the development
and program departments. Beth brings 19 years of fundraising experience
to her position and has worked in education, arts and political action
organizations. Beth has her B.A. in Sociology and Japanese from Middlebury
College and her M.A. in Asia Pacific Studies from the University of
San Francisco. When she is not at Breakthrough, she is kept busy by
her two- and four-footed children.
